Can Quality Payment Programs Contribute to Improving Value

Value-based programmes are those which reward the health care providers for the quality of treatment provided by them instead of the number of procedures they perform on patients with Medicare. Quality payment programs have been introduced by the CMS in the USA. Their aim was to have Merit and value-based reimbursement system for healthcare providers.

These programs have two main tracks that differ in the amount the healthcare providers receive depending upon the policies under each of them. The two tracks are:

• MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System)

• APM (Advanced Alternative Payment Model)

From these definitions, we can understand that the quality payment programs are an extension to the value-based care options. With the innovations in healthcare technology and development of software such as EHR, electronic data capture, and simplified payment options, it reduces the chances of duplication and speeds up the process of payment collection. With everything going digital, tracking patient treatment quality and linking it with their Medicare, pay-out to the healthcare providers only becomes easy. It is also easy to track all the data that is being fed into the systems and study it.

So, we can say that quality payment programs contribute and add significantly to the value-based care options available today and pave the way for future technological advances.
